Rules for References
2002-11-04 - 14:22:38

More loafing about at work. Actually, that's not really true, I'm just taking a break. I have been working all day. I'm looking forward to the day when I don't have a single reference check to do. They can be very tedious! And folks, here are some things you should try and remember to do when you are putting together a list of references:

Rule #1: ASK THE PERSON FIRST!! It is mightly awkward when you call a person's reference to have that reference respond, "They gave ME as a reference?" Not a good first impression.

Rule #2: MAKE SURE YOUR REFERENCE KNOWS WHO YOU ARE!! Perhaps this should actually be a corrolary to Rule #1. It is even more awkward when you call a reference and have them respond, "Who?" Do you really want it known that you are that forgetable?

Rule #3: FIND OUT WHAT YOUR REFERENCE WILL SAY ABOUT YOU TO A PROSPECTIVE EMPLOYER!! Do you really want your prospective employer calling one of you references to have the reference tell them what a lousy employee you were? Talk to the people you are thinking of listing as a reference FIRST. You should try and guage if they will show you in a positive light. If you don't think they will, DON'T LIST THEM AS A REFERENCE.

Rule #4: PROVIDE CONTACT INFORMATION FOR YOUR REFERENCES!! A prospective employer will not track down your references for you. That is your job. "Joe Blow at Jim's Garage" is not good enough contact information!

Thus ends Wyrdsisters Rules for References. If I think of any more, I'll add them later. ;) And hey, if you have any to add, please share them with everyone by adding your tip to my guestbook! The job-seaking public will thank you.

BB, all!
